Providian was a credit card issuer that operated in the United States from 1997 to 2005. The company focused on providing credit cards to subprime borrowers, or those with lower credit scores, who may have had difficulty obtaining credit from traditional banks. Providian offered a range of credit card products, including secured credit cards, unsecured credit cards, and rewards credit cards.
However, Providian faced a number of regulatory challenges and lawsuits related to its lending practices, particularly allegations of aggressive marketing tactics and hidden fees. In 2005, Providian was acquired by Washington Mutual, which later itself faced financial difficulties and was acquired by JPMorgan Chase.
As a result, Providian credit cards are no longer being issued. Existing Providian credit card accounts were converted to JPMorgan Chase accounts, and customers were given new Chase-branded credit cards. If you had a Providian credit card in the past, you may still have access to your account information through Chase's online banking portal.
